Whether you performed with the Marching Huskies, the Marching Huskie Show Band, or the Huskie Marching Band, you were once a member of the “Pride of the Midwest.” We’re pleased to invite you back to campus on Saturday, October 12th to join the 2013 NIU Alumni Marching Band for the 107th Homecoming at NIU. Even if you haven’t played your horn, tossed your flag, or danced your routine since your last performance at Northern, now is the time to dust off your chops and help “Fill the Field.”
In an effort to build a strong Alumni Band and keep us all in touch with the current Huskie Marching Band and Northern Illinois University, the Marching Band Alumni Council—in conjunction with the Alumni Association—formed the NIU Alumni Band affinity group in December 2006. We’re building a database of former Band members—instrumentalists, color guard, Silverettes, twirlers—and helping the Alumni Association plan appropriate social events to bring us together on a regular basis. As part of our efforts, an Alumni Band website is available on which we’ll be posting audio and video clips and historical information (http://www.niualumniband.com).
PERFORMING OPPORTUNITIES. For the 7th consecutive year, the Alumni Band will perform the entire pregame show on the field alongside the Huskie Marching Band. The pregame music includes NIU Fanfare, Hail to the Huskies, Huskie Fight Song, Alma Mater, and Star Spangled Banner.
Alumni are invited back on the field for the halftime (Fight Song only) and postgame shows, and are welcome to join the Band for the Huskie Band Preview (pregame music), tailgating parade, pep rally, and stand tunes. We encourage you to play as much as you want and are able.
Postgame will feature the combined bands presenting Styx’s Grand Illusion/Renegade, Best of Times/Too Much Time on My Hands, and Mr. Roboto, plus the playing and singing of the Alma Mater and Huskie Fight Song. If you plan to play the postgame show, we ask that you also attend the morning rehearsals and perform in pregame.
AFTERGLOW / POSTGAME SOCIAL EVENT. After the postgame show, you and your guests are welcome to attend the Alumni Band afterglow at the Barsema Alumni and Visitors Center on the NIU campus. The BAVC is located east of Huskie Stadium, south of the Rec Center and next to the TV Center. A $10 cover charge for each person age 13 and over will include a pizza and salad buffet. A cash bar will be provided. Kids age 12 and under will be admitted free.
INSTRUMENTS. Due to the Band’s tremendous growth in recent years, virtually every instrument the Band owns is used by current members, so we ask that you provide your own instrument. Your local school or music store may be able to assist you. The Band can provide flags for alumni color guard.
MUSIC. The pregame music and “stand jams” are available in PDF format on the Alumni Band and Huskie Marching Band (http://www.niu.edu/band) websites. Note that these arrangements might be different from what you played “back then.” The postgame Styx music PDFs will be e-mailed to you after you register but can’t be posted online due to copyright laws. Please print the music and bring it with you. And don’t forget your lyre and flip folder, which you may obtain from your local music store or an online supplier.
SCHOLARSHIP DONATION. Part of the mission of the Alumni Band affinity group is to give something back to NIU and the current Huskie Marching Band. Thus we ask each Alumni Band performer to make a tax-deductible donation to the Band to be used exclusively for a scholarship for a current Band student. The suggested donation is $20 but please give any amount with which you are comfortable. Donations can also be accepted from Alumni who can’t join us for Homecoming. We’ve developed a cycle where money raised this year provides the scholarship(s) next year. These scholarships are critically important to the recipients, allowing them to remain in school and continue playing in the Band.
UNIFORM. To provide a consistent look on the field and demonstrate our Huskie pride, we ask each Alumni Band member to wear our “official” long-sleeved red t-shirt and dark/black pants or jeans. The cost of the shirt is $25. This is a one-time purchase since the design hasn’t changed since 2006 and the same shirt can be reused in future years.
GAME TICKETS. Game tickets for general admission seating in the east grandstand are available at the group rate of $10 each. You’re welcome to sit near the Band. You’ll need to purchase ticket(s) for yourself and each guest.
SECURITY. Per NIU Athletics policy, only performing members with wristbands may come onto the football field for rehearsal, pregame, and halftime. Your guests may watch us from the east stands, but children under age 18 must be supervised by an adult.
REGISTRATION. Due to the complexity of Saturday’s performing activities, walk-ins can’t be accommodated and advance registration is required. You may register online (credit card payment) or by mail using this form (credit card or check payment). Please register and submit payment by Friday, September 27th.
SCHEDULE. Please note that due to the 4:00 kickoff, the schedule has changed from prior years. Our day starts with a 10:15 meet and greet and 11:00 rehearsal, both at Huskie Stadium. Shirts, tickets, and wristbands will be distributed then. Although we don’t expect changes, the final schedule will be e-mailed to registrants and posted on the Alumni Band website a few days before Homecoming. Download the day's schedule.
HOMECOMING PARKING. Free parking is available at Evans Field House if you enter the lot before 11:00 a.m. Evans is across Annie Glidden Road from the Barsema Alumni and Visitors Center, so you don’t have to move your car for the Afterglow. If you require handicapped parking, please indicate that on the registration website or form so arrangements can be made with NIU Athletics.
We look forward to continuing the Alumni Band as an annual homecoming tradition at NIU. Our goal is to reengage former Band members from all decades to grow the Alumni Band and “Fill the Field” every year.
The Council thanks the Alumni Association for their assistance in identifying and contacting Marching Band alumni. We know that despite our best efforts, we haven’t reached all former Band members. Please pass this information along to other alumni or direct them to the Alumni Band, Huskie Marching Band, and Alumni Association websites. We also have an active presence on Facebook.
